Is Car Insurance a Utility Bill?

Many people often ask the question: Is car insurance a utility bill? If we look at all utility bills, car insurance or auto insurance is not classified as a utility bill. Utility bills are for gas, electricity, cell phone, home phone, home broadband, and water/sewer. These can all have many different providers, but they can also have just one pair. This depends on the company you work with and the system you use.

Auto insurance does not fall into any of the above categories. Car insurance is an indemnity contract between an insurer and a car owner that protects the owner from financial loss. It is a service provided by a private company: your insurer. You don’t need auto insurance to maintain your property.

What Differentiates Car Insurance from Utility Bills?

Car insurance is a financial contract, but it is more than that. When you pay for your policy, you pay for protection and service.

You have to pay the fee or premium to keep your insurance coverage, but that doesn’t mean the contract meets the definition of public service.

Insurance is generally a contract between the insurer (the insurance company) and the insured (you) to protect you against financial loss. The insured person pays a monthly, quarterly or annual premium in exchange for coverage, as agreed in the contract.

Auto insurance is a financial contract and payments are your way of fulfilling the contract. Auto insurance companies offer these services for profit only and therefore auto insurance accounts are not included in the utility account category.

While some utility bills are provided through private companies, providers must work closely with city or county authorities to provide their services. Therefore, these services fall under the category of energy bills.

Is it possible to use your Car Insurance payments as Proof of Address?

If someone needs proof of residency, he or she may ask you to, for example, bring a utility bill with your name and address clearly stated.

For example, if you need to prove that you live in a specific location or that you qualify for a “local discount”, you may need to provide a utility bill.

In this situation, you may be able to use the auto insurance account as proof of residency. Your address must be on your car insurance policy. Your auto insurance bill also comes from a reputable, independent service provider, similar to utility bills. Ultimately, it is up to the insurance company to verify your proof of address documents to decide whether auto insurance counts as an energy cost for this purpose.

You may be wondering what an invoice has to do with your identity and it is simply believed to show that utilities are at an address in your name. Here are several times when you will be asked for utility bills:

  • When applying for a car loan, you may be required to show your address and income
  • You apply for a revolving credit line through a department store to purchase electronics or other consumer goods.
  • You are applying for health insurance or another government benefit if you belong to a low-income group
  • Proof of residency when you enrol your child in a local public school
  • Proof of residency when registering a vehicle or applying for a driver’s license in a new state
